Good workout today ...

45 minute swim workout (2200 yards)
35 minute cycle
19 minute run outdoors up hills

I'm adding a minute to my post- swim/cycle run each week, so by the time June 5 rolls around I should be up to about 25-26 minutes of running. That sprint tri will be a piece of cake. Or at least maybe I won't crap out during the run for once. Maybe I'll actually feel good ...

Had some quinoa and scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese and half an apple (sliced with cinnamon) after the workout. I'm trying to make smarter food choices, but sometimes the call of grilled cheese sandwiches, Snickers bars, Dr. Pepper, and any restaurant with pizza, queso, or Cajun fries is very convincing. Particularly after a long day at work. Sometimes I reward myself with junk food. How sad.

Moving up ... and annoying others.

Here's the thing about group swim workouts ... they're most effective when you swim with people who are about your speed. Fellow swimmers, am I right? Yes, I am.

So, last Saturday, I go to my triathlon training class, which begins with a 45-minute swim workout. Forty-five minutes. No big deal. Since the swim is so short, I like to try to get the most out of it. You know, challenge myself with intervals that will get my heart pumping and at least sort of simulate the experience of pushing myself during a race.

Now, I have no problem sharing a lane with folks who go on about the same interval as me. I also have no problem sharing with slower folks when the pool is really full. I can slow down so that the seven other people in my lane can go at a challenging, yet manageable pace--even if I'm not particularly challenged--if the pool is crowded. No problemo.

BUT!!! When there are only 1-3 people per lane, no one should have to be in a lane with someone who is either much faster or much slower. Unless, of course, you're in the lane with the superstar triathlete who is good on the land but not so good in the water. The person who wants to get "a good workout" and invades the fast lanes in order to do so, completely oblivious to the fact that he/she is slowing down everyone else in that lane.

Last Saturday, I'm getting ready for the warm-up, when Ms. Speedy hops into the my lane, which is already occupied by me and another swimmer (i.e., no chance for splitting the lane -- we all must circle swim).

Ms. Speedy then proceeds to inform us that even though she is a "slow swimmer," she wants to get a "good workout today."

I just gawk.

And then I push off the wall for the 400 warm-up.

It's not too long before I'm ready to pass Ms. Speedy, who (I soon discover) would be better suited to lane 2, rather than lane 4. As we make our way through the workout, I eventually move myself over to lane 5, which we're not supposed to use during our workouts ...

Ms. Speedy has slowed down my lane mates, so that they're all going her pace and on her interval. They're not even getting the yardage done.

So, Ms. Speedy, I'm wondering ... what was the point of moving over to lane 4, if you were just going to do the workout and intervals assigned to lane 2. WHAT IS THE POINT???!?!? You're just slowing down the rest of us, you goob.

This is yet another example of poor pool etiquette. Ms. Speedy, you FAIL.

BRicks and Yummy Eggs

Yesterday, Trent and I learned a new definition for "brick." It stands for "bike, run, Ick!" At our triathlon training class, we did our 45 minute swim, followed by a bike, a run, another bike, another run, and a bike. The time and distance weren't bad (10-15 minutes on the bike, 6-7 minutes of running [outdoors up and down hills]), and we actually felt pretty good doing it.

We had been running indoors after our cycling class (it's been cold here!), but as the weather warms up, we'll take the run outdoors immediately following the class (no cool down and stretch; we just hop off the bikes, clean them up, and run out the door). Now, at least, we have a running route.

Also, I've discovered my new favorite way to eat eggs. It's inspired by the Clary's Cafe omelette in Savannah, GA. I'm not too swift at making omelettes, so I just scramble my eggs ...

1. Cut half an apple into small pieces, and sprinkle cinnamon over the top.
2. Scramble two eggs with salt, pepper, and a generous helping of shredded cheddar cheese.
3. When the eggs are done, turn off the burner, and throw the cinnamon apples on top. Stir. Let sit for 1-2 minutes, so apples get warm.

Enjoy! It's so good. Interesting combo of flavors.

Hope all is well for everyone. Write soon!

Triathlon training

We did it! Trent and I made it to our first triathlon training class together, and we're still standing ... a little wobbly, but we're upright.

I did my own mini-version of the class last week, since I was at a conference Saturday morning, but this morning, we did a 45 minute swim workout with Coach Muriel, followed by a 45 minute cycling workout, followed by a 10 minute run.

Yes, the run is short, but we're planning to add a minute each week until we get closer to the race we're thinking of doing in June. If we can get up to 20-25 minutes of running after the swim and cycle workouts, we should be fine for a sprint tri.

It was really fun swimming with a group again. I paced off a guy in the lane next to me and completed a 2100 yard workout in just under 45 minutes. Trent did an amazing job, too. He swam 950 yards!! And this is only his 3rd time swimming. He's a fish in the water; he just needs to build up his endurance. The cycle class was fun, and the run immediately following wasn't too bad.

After we got home, I fixed quinoa (my brother, Andy, recommends it as a protein source to repair muscle), and Trent fixed us some eggs. I also ate a couple of bananas from Coach Muriel (Trent didn't want his, so I ate it.) I'm a little tired but feeling pretty good.

Hope all is well for everyone. Dawn, where've you been? Honor, what's happening in your neck of the woods?

I was feeling all tough and buff....

I've been swimming two mornings a week with a master's program. I have to drag my oversized butt out of bed super early but I get a shower alone AND Adam makes me a yummy protien filled b'fast in the morning. Rock on.

The coach was teaching a couple lanes how to do flip turns. Normally, I don't do them when preg because it feels like the baby was coming out of my nose! However, I felt all peppy and onery and tried one. And I could do it! Woohoo!

My times are improving too, which is odd because I have NO rotation in my hips. My chiro notices this too. While I can turn my head fine, she can't. Apparently, there is something going on with my head/spine/pelvis; I have a protective mechinaism going to keep my hips from getting too loose. Since I am 32 week today and considering what I've been through, this makes perfect sense. I just hope they loosen up sometimes after 35 weeks!

ANYWAY, the no rotation thing makes it harder to swim but I must be doing very well since my interval times are dropping. I'm a little more toned in my arms. It's harder to swim (but not that bad) and impossible to kick.

I was totally feeling all sexy and buff and like hot stuff Thursday... then Friday I went to put on my fave pair of pants. They would not button. I put the elastic on the loosest setting. No dice. They FIT but wouldn't button. Adam tried to tell me to "suck it in" but this kid doesn't suck in! I am now down to two pairs of pants. I think I need a new pair. I suppose I can't complain since those were a maternity size 8 and I can wear them post partum without screaming, "I'm still in maternity clothes!!!!" But, yeah, so much for feeling tough, buff and sex-ay! ;)
