I found this off a link on Facebook and it comes from the Vaccine Information Network. I have not checked out all the links, so please check them out and do your own homework, of course! For me, personally, nutrasweet (brand name for aspartame) is the debil- it triggers mirgraines! I always felt funny after drinking a diet coke and I hated the bitter aftertaste of diet yogurts... and it just got worse over time. (Stevia leaves an aftertaste too do good ole refined sugar- or the kind I refine myself in the grinder- is the way to go for me!)

As they said at Weight Watchers, sugar begets sugar, even fake sugar. The sugary taste makes you crave more sugar and thus over eat!

Aspartame (E951) is an artificial sweetener, used in over 6000 products. The food industry claims that aspartame helps in losing weight, but why is obesity then becoming such an ever increasing problem?

http://www.naturalnews.com/001253.html

Aspartame is a very sweet chemical, responsible for a host of health problems such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, brain diseases, migraines, ADHD, etc.

Aspartame breaks down into three components:

1. Methanol.
This is poisonous alcohol. In the body, methanol breaks down into formaldehyde, which is a poison.

2. Phenylalanine.
This decreases the amount serotonin in your brain, which leads to mood swings (depressions) and an increased appetite! This is why aspartame is one of the main causes for the current obesity epidemic.

3. Aspartic acid.
This is a neurological toxin comparable to MSG.

The US Department of Health has recorded 92 (!) symptoms following complaints about aspartame. In fact, over 80% of all complaints filed with FDA are related to aspartame consumption!

http://www.321recipes.com/symptoms.html

Some of the brand names for aspartame:
NutraSweet, Equal, NatraTaste, Canderel, Spoonful, Equal-Measure, etc.

Aspartame is used in any of the following products:
Sugarfree, Light, Diet, Zero (Coke, Sprite & Fanta), Coke 007, Pepsi Max, Crystal Clear, Low-Calorie, Crystal Light, No Sugar Added, Sportlife, Stimorol Ice, Stimorol Fusion, Freedent, Mentos, Smint, etc.

If you use any of these products, please watch this investigative report by FOX 5 News.

Do no longer believe the lies of the food industry and the main stream media. Contrary to what industry-paid 'health experts' claim, aspartame is NOT safe.

In fact, aspartame is a very sweet poison developed to make people sick so the pharmaceutical industry can sell expensive medication to 'treat' the chronic diseases that are caused by it's use.

Avoid this toxic chemical for 60 days and discover how your health will improve dramatically!

Other artificial sweeteners that you should avoid:
Acesulfame K (E950), Cyclamate (E952), Isomalt (E953), Saccharin (E954), Sucralose or Splenda (E955), Alitame (E956), Neohesperidine (E959), Neotame (E961), Salt of Aspartame-Acesulfame (E962), Maltitol (E965), Lactitol (E966), Sorbitol (E420), Mannitol (E421), Glycerol (E422).

Natural based sweeteners and thus relatively safe:
Xylitol (E967), Thaumatin (E957).

Healthy sugar replacements:

Organic raw sugar, maple syrup and honey.

The low calorie, all natural sweetener Stevia, used in Paraguay for centuries:

Do you find it difficult to lose weight and live healthy?
The solution is actually quite simple.

Avoid all artificial sweeteners, flavor enhancers and (partially) hydrogenated oils/fats (trans fats) as they are the main causes of obesity and disease.
Read the book 'Fit for Life' by Harvey Diamond. This book will transform your life, in fact you'll never have to get on a diet again for the rest of your life!

Very Informative...Thank you! When I was in college (ESU) and coaching swimming I use to drink two--count 'em--TWO diet cokes per practice. Not only did I have terrible guilt for drinking soda in front of my swimmers but I became addicted to the stuff. Now I'm just a regular old Pepsi addict, but at least Pepsi makes a "Throwback" version, with plain old sugar in it. I don't think I'm a sugar nut, I don't crave sweet very often. I am allergic to everything bees, including honey so I can't substitute that. I think I'll do okay if I can stay away from Pepsi and cooking ready made meals. Thanks for the information!

Amen. Amen. Amen. I agree with you 100 per cent. Any informed diabetic will tell you that aspartame is a chemical that messes with blood sugar levels, among other things. Professionals are being paid to state that aspartame is healthy. The Food and Drug Administration worries more about filling personal pocketbooks than the welfare of the public. I sound like a real cynic, don't I? I apologise for my negativity, but everything you have stated is true. I have a friend whose son is unable to work because of chronic joint and muscle pain. He uses NutraSweet. His Mom has tried to persuade him to stop using it. He will see a nutritionist soon. Hopefully, the nutritionist will enlighten him about NutraSweet. Great article. Thanks.

Wow--thanks for sharing this, Laura. I'd heard inklings of problems associated with these non-natural sweeteners, but since I don't (knowingly, I guess) consume them myself, I hadn't really paid that much attention ...

Are they mostly in processed foods (e.g. pop, cookies), or are they in other things I might be eating without realizing it? Peanut butter? (I eat a PBJ every day at work for lunch.)

Trent tends to eat more processed foods than I do, particularly in the lunches he packs for work. At home, he eats pretty nutritiously ... though not a lot of variety (grilled chicken and green beans or chicken fajitas w/ Tyson chicken strips).

Thanks for sharing!

Katie, I've found the stuff in things labeled "sugar free." Obviously, Nutrasweet is the brand name, so you have to look for things that do NOT list that or the generic name. I also avoid splenda too. I've been doing this for awhile, so now I can totally taste it in foods! I have found that most pre-packaged foods do not contain it unless they are labeled "sugar free." Now, High Frutose Corn Syrup- that is also some wicked nasty stuff that is in every frackin' thing. (Not that I hate it or anything!)THAT is hard to avoid.
I've found once you do some label reading, it is easy to avoid certain foods because you know what brands to look for. I've been avoiding fake sweeteners, HFCS, trans fats and a couple other things for awhile now and it is easy because I know what brands to look for.
